The Function of Settings

The setting of The Bite of the Mango occurred at Sierra Leone, it is on the west coast of Africa, south of the country Guinea and northwest of the country Liberia. Most people know that the African countries are struggling with wealth, rebellion, etc. In this, case I am going to talk about Sierra Leone during the rebellion in 20th century. The setting of the book occurred at Sierra Leone, the main character/narrator, Mariatu Kamara, lived in a village called Manarma, with her aunt, uncle and cousins, which she also called them brothers and sisters. The setting of the book changes a few times. They heard that the rebels are coming to Manarma, so Mariatu's aunt and uncle want her to go to the other village called Magborou, along with her cousins. The setting of the book is significant because it tells us where the main character is, such as where they lived and where they at the moment. This is important because we want to know where the story takes place, for example, in the introduction, Mariatu introduced where she lived. "Our village of Magborou was small, like most villages in Sierra Leone, with about 200 people living there". This passage gave us a clue of where this story is going to happen but at some point, the setting will change caused by an antagonist, in this situation its the rebels. Sometimes changes in setting are caused naturally like relocation. Speaking of changes in setting, it reminds me of the book Hunger Games: Catching Fire I red, every chapter of the book the setting changed. To conclude, every setting of the book has its own significance. What do you think?
